[Edit] These guys pointed out that I am still covered by the drivetrain warranty. Dealership, here I come.
I sought out a VW indy shop to get my oil change and brake flush. With just over 50k miles, I figured that I’d better find someone that I trust before the repairs start coming.
And dammit if, sure enough, the mechanic found that my water pump is leaking. Well, it’s not like I’ve treated this car gently.
I think that I trust this shop. Dang it.
I should just get a new car, right? (Kidding)

just over 50k miles and the water pump is out? jesus, get out now.

Water pump is a maintenance item on German automobiles.

I’m use to “mandatory” 100K water pump changes on BMWs, 50K is a bit early but not shocking.

What year is yours? My buddy with a Mk6 just had his pump replaced as it was leaky. They are indeed a consumable on these cars it seems.

Ugh that’s what I most worried about although I’m under 25k still. Seems like these cars are decent besides water pumps. Knocks on wood

That's how my mkvi got me. Fix a seal now. The again a year from now. Then the wife's asking why we keep spending money on this car, and you got no good answer

This is a common issue, so at least you aren’t alone.

If it makes you feel any better, according to the CarFax on my Disco, the head gaskets failed (for the first time, but certainly not the last) at 58k so... could be worse haha.

I guess I’ll just pencil this in for replacement around 50,000 miles.

Seems pretty common on these, sucks though. Interestingly, Consumer Reports recently bumped up their reliability rating for the GTI , they used to be below average for most years but now only the ‘ 15 and ‘ 16 are. The ‘ 17, ‘ 18 (my year ) , and ‘ 19 model years are now all average or above.

I have a 16 as well. Damnit. Guess I need to budget for repairs like this in the near future. I only have 26k on mine though. So it breaks due to wear, I'm set for a bit.

Buy something aircooled so you don’t have to worry about water pump failure ever?

Warranty, just keep an eye on it and try to catch it before 5 years or 60k . Stopped at the dealer, they are going to replace it, claimed that there is a new part so that it isn’t as much of a problem anymore.

VW needing a water pump?

Yeah, I wouldn’t worry too much while you’re under the powertrain warranty. Plus, if you like the car enough, having to do 1 or 2 repairs during the course of ownership vs a trouble-free experience in something boring isn’t the worst thing ever. (a s long as it isn’t something huge like an engine or trans replacement at least).

I love VW in that if (when) they find a faulty part they will upgrade it sell it as a normal replacement item. I am not really being that sarcastic. They often have them on hand too. So if I go to a dealer and ask for X part for a 10 or 20 year old car (damn my Golf is old) and they have 10 in stock you know it is something they know is going to fail. I’m sure it makes it easier for them that many of the parts are shared across models. Three that come to mind are the power window guide cables (went from plastic to metal), thermostat, and the coolant distribution piece (octopus off of block).

Exactly my thoughts. And even a $800 repair every couple of years would be cheaper than a new car payment, from the ( unlikely) replacement standpoint.
